These are just a few habits you can embrace to get your metabolism going right away. You may have heard stories of people who lost several dozen pounds simply by switching to diet soda or walking for a few minutes every day. These are all little habits that make a big difference and increase your metabolism over time. You will lose weight faster and easier by increasing your metabolism and burning more calories.

1) Move more

Seated people burn about a third fewer calories per day. By simply taking every opportunity to exercise, it can make quite a dramatic difference to the amount of calories you burn in a day. Small movements will add up to a lot of calories over time. The trick is to keep moving all day long. Write the word “move” on post it notes and place them where you will notice them while sitting still. Then take every opportunity to exercise – here are some ideas for burning extra calories:

  • Tap your feet
  • Swing your legs
  • Get up and stretch
  • Move your head back and forth
  • Change position
  • Squirm and fidget

By consuming multiple servings of “healthy” fats every day, you increase your potential to burn calories. Try to include fats such as flaxseed oil, hemp seed oil, olive oil, avocados, salmon, albacore, nuts, and seeds in your diet on a daily basis.

4) Drink cold water

There is some evidence that your body may be using more calories by bringing cold water to your body temperature than hot drinks. And if you are generally well hydrated, your body’s metabolic processes will burn faster.

5) Exercise with weights

Exercising with weights increases your metabolism in a number of ways. By lifting weights you build muscle tissue. And muscle tissue is metabolically active, so it needs calories even at rest, thus helping to increase the fat-burning enzymes in your body.

6) Spice up

Eating hot spices can speed up your metabolism. Just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day can boost metabolism and control blood sugar. Can’t stand the thought of cinnamon in your morning cup of coffee? Season with cayenne, crushed red pepper, or wasabi.

7) Eat more protein

Protein requires a more complex chemical breakdown by your body to be digested and used as fuel. For example, processing 100 calories of protein can take up to 30 calories. Proteins also take longer to digest and help stabilize blood sugar for extended periods of time and this can help you avoid overeating later in the day. Eat a serving of protein with every meal and as part of your snacks and you’ll increase the total number of calories you burn each day.
